I tried but there was one offering too good to pass. There was online conversation about how bad Korg’s Windows 10 USB drivers are and discussion turner to Behringer’s copies of ARPs. Went to check videos of Behringer 2600 and played little with Arturia’s virtual 2600. Next day Behringer 2600 was 33% off from its normal price. I guess it was destiny or something. I was going to buy another synth from same place because it was 500 euros cheaper than elsewhere and it wasn’t even black week sale. Got that too.
Sequential OB-6 is most expensive musical instrument I have ever bought. I have wanted one ever since it was released. I am hesitant to buy anything that expensive. I seriously considered options for polyphonic analog synth with more than four voices. Because I don’t have much room it limits options to modules. It leaves Sequential Prophets and OB-6. Prophet Rev 2 is only one of Prophets I could seriously consider and it is updated version of Tetra without feedback. That leaves OB-6. OB-6 module to be exact.
I am not sure if it is good idea to have synth with character as main polyphonic synth. I give it a shot and if it doesn’t work I can get Prophet Rev 2 or something else later. Even if it doesn’t work as main polyphonic synth it sounds like nothing else I have. 2600 should satisfy need for complex monophonic synth. Can’t save presets or control it with midi but I have other synths which can and which also can do quite complex stuff. After these I getting close to setup I can commit to. There is still serious lack of Moog. That probably changes some time next year. Sub 25 is quite tempting. If they release module version of it I will get it.
I think I follow something comes in something goes out mindset with synths from now on. Building pedalboards made me play more and check other pedals less. With pedalboards it has to do with room on board and power. I could add few more synths to setup. Not actually sure how many because I have synths I don’t consider part of setup connected to setup. These two took place of Waldorf Blofeld and one of original Roland Boutiques. Haven’t turned on neither for ages. Other thing I include to future purchase is how I add them to setup. These were first purchases I actually planned how to add them. Previously it was just getting the synth and then figuring out how to add it to setup. Which resulted getting nice synths which haven’t got too much use.
No more nice synths or dreaming of PolyBrute or MatrixBrute. Same goes for Hydra. With limited number of synths I don’t want to waste it with digital. I can get digital from software. This doesn’t mean no new synths. There are two synths which I like to replace in near future. One does what Moog does better. Another one just doesn’t sit well on my workflow and could be easily replaced by more versatile synth. I am not sure which one yet.
This also doesn’t mean setup won’t expand. It currently has all my analog synths which can be controlled by midi. I have other synths which only take note information from midi. Not sure if 2600 is enough to satisfy itch to use semi-modular and eurorack when I have it well integrated to setup. Other question is how much I use it. I like to automate parameter changes. Semi-modulars and eurorack have been more for fun times than making music. 2600 is there when I want that kind of fun. Hopefully I can use it in music making too. At least I try to.
..and yes, I know I should have boycotted Behringer. That is reason why I haven’t considered getting DeepMind.
