My Doctor Aphra binge continues with Volume 2 Doctor Aphra and the Enormous Profit and Volume 3 Remastered. These got me close to halfway point of this run of her own comic. It is still best thing Disney’s Star Wars have given us.
In The Enormous Profit Aphra is selling ancient Jedi artifact to highest bidder. Her problem is the artifact doesn’t want to be sold, her evil droids don’t like her new less murderous ways and her wookie bounty hunter wants revenge on couple of potential buyers. Everything goes as well as you expect. This story ends several longer arcs some starting from beginning of this run, some starting from Darth Vader (2015 - 2016). Story reminded me of Fifth Element in a good way. I can’t pinpoint what it was but it reminded the movie. What seriousness was in Screaming Citadel was totally gone. Even when one character from original trilogy came to visit Aphra’s auction.
Remastered starts new longer arcs after The Enormous Profit ended what was before. Triple-Zero is now leader of crime syndicate. He blackmails Aphra to find information about his past. Story turns into giant heist where Aphra tries to make it alive. There are tons of convenient timings but it is ok. This doesn’t try to be serious in any way. Tolvan from first story arc comes back. Aphra and Tolvan find each others but it doesn’t work well when one is takes her job as Empire’s investigator seriously and other one tries to steal from Empire with help of rebels.
I generally liked the story but it is pretty dark because of Triple-Zero. He felt funnier when he was on Aphra’s control. Now he is the master and no-one is holding him back. He was dark character earlier but he didn’t feel like it because he wasn’t in control. Now that I think of it same is true with all other evil droids in Star Wars. I liked his comments when he was in Aphra’s control but I guess that was too much for popular Star Wars character.
I have enjoyed first half of this run. Screaming Citadel was little disappointment. You can’t have fun Aphra ride with original trilogy cast. Aphra worked better with them when she was more serious and worked for Darth Vader. Rebel Jail was really good. She changed more care free and less serious for her own comic.
