I have understood Moon Knight is cool. I have got few of his comics from sales but haven’t read them yet. Yes. I buy more than I read. I try to fix that. I like Avengers movies but haven’t read their comics that much. X-Men is more of my thing. I picked this up because it had Moon Knight related story arc. Yes. It was on sale too.
The Age of Khonshu is part of larger Mephisto related story arc. First two issues are part of that arc without Moon Knight. To be honest those issues didn’t make me want to read Avengers. I haven’t read anything before this so I am not sure what is going on. Avengers have powerful toddler they take care of. Mephisto is behind bars but plotting to destroy Avenger. He tries to unite Avengers’ enemies against Avengers. But at same time he and multidimensional versions of him are setting something across different times. And stone age has their versions of Avengers and there always has to be Tony Stark for some reason. And Tony Stark was taken to stone age by Mephisto for some reason. Mephisto needed him in stone age to do something he couldn’t do in modern day. It is a total mess.
I didn’t buy this to read Avengers. I bought this to read about Moon Knight. Well. The Moon Knight story is tied to Mephisto story arc. I go more into spoiler than I usually do because I want to talk about this insanity. Moon Knight and Khonsu (moon god) see visions of Mephisto destroying the Earth or something. And there was someone else with Mephisto at the beginning but not at the end of story arc. Something about ancient gods or something.
Moon Knight steal powers of several Avengers in to amulets. Then he and Khonsu go to kill Mephisto. They needed Avengers powers for this. Moon Knight give power amulets to Khonsu so he can destroy Mephisto’s body. Destroying Mephisto’s body wasn’t enough. Khonsu needs more power. He still needs power of Black Panther or the toddler who is with Avengers. They need this to stop Mephisto they just killed. Makes lot of sense.
Khonsu starts Age of Khonsu and builds protection for Earth. Alternative universe versions of Mephisto start to attack Khonsu. Khonsu beats them easily. So why he needed more power and make protections for Earth. Is it because of Mephisto’s buddy who is not mentioned after this story arch begins. It probably wasn’t Tony Stark’s father who works for Mephisto. Around this time Moon Knight meets Nick Fury who is chained to the moon. Fury tells Moon Knight how to stop this.
Black Panther attacks Khonsu alone. At this point Khonsu has several Avengers’ powers. Moon Knight appears some how into this fight. Khonsu makes Moon Knight think Black Panther is Mephisto. Black Panther and Moon Knight start to fight. Khonsu tells Thor’s hammer to take him to the Powerful Toddler. Don’t know why he didn’t do that before. He wanted Toddler’s powers but didn’t go to Toddler until now.
Moon Knight and Black Panther fight even after Moon Knight knows Black Panther is not Mephisto. He needs to be beaten really badly. After Moon Knight is beaten badly enough he gains power of Phoenix because why not. With power of Phoenix Moon Knight goes to stop Khonsu. He send Khonsu to Earth where Avengers can beat him. That is end of the Age of Khonsu. Moon Knight becomes normal again. Trade ends with Avengers learning about multidimensional Mephistos and their plans. End hints this world’s Mephisto is about to be reborn.
If this was meant to make Moon Knight look interesting it was successful. The Age of Khonsu is Moon Knight driven story. It follows Moon Knight more than others and Moon Knight is main narrator. It is more of a Moon Knight book than Avengers book. But this is Avengers book which builds up to something big Mephisto related. If this was meant to make me want to read more Avengers it wasn’t successful. Avengers weren’t that interesting and the whole Mephisto arc is just one big mess. I don’t waste my time and money with it.
This trade wasn’t waste of time and money. Main focus being on Moon Knight and Khonsu made this interesting. Moon Knight and Khonsu were trying to save the world. You can disagree about the methods but they weren’t evil. They did what they thought was right. Comic looks good. Khonsu is visually interesting character. Ancient Egypt based looks worked. Nonsense story worked with Moon Knight who isn’t the most serious character. Moon Knight becoming Phoenix was too much and story could have done without so many stupid plot holes. It is very stupid but cool and looks good.
