I remember reading somewhere Coffin Bound is mix of Quentin Tarantino and Neil Gaiman. They got wrong grind house director. This is closer to Planet Terror than Death Proof. I would say this is something Robert Rodriquez could come up with after binge reading Sandman comics. This has Robert Rodriquez’s sense of coolness and it goes over the top like in his movies. I was going to add Sin City to list but then I saw Robert Rodriquez made movie adaption of it. So this is something Robert Rodriquez could come up with.
This is story of Izzy who decides to get rid of everything her life has touched when she gets unstoppable hitman after her. I thought it would be killing everyone she has been with when I heard about it but it doesn’t go that dark. It is more of fixing bad things she has caused and destroying what she has done. This starts dark journey into road movie like nightmarish dream world. World has logic but it is more dream logic than real world logic.
Comic goes quite disgusting at times. It almost have point but by trying to make everything to have some weird sense of coolness it loses it. Some characters would have worked better if not being so over the top. Journey and Izzy were interesting enough to keep me interested and ending wasn’t too bad. I also liked the art. With different art I might not have finished the comic.
Second volume should start this summer if corona pandemic hasn’t postponed it. I am curious to know where it goes after first volume. Will Coffin Bound be like Sin City which tells different characters’ stories from same city? First volume gives that sort of feel.
