There was Facebook page which posted comic book pages without content. I found few interesting comics through it. Dr. Strange, Surgeon Supreme was one of those comics. Page hasn’t been there for some time now but it took this long for first and last volume to be released.
Doctor Strange is sorcerer supreme and surgeon supreme. He divides his time working at hospital and fighting magical beings. I am not too familiar with the character. This is first of his own comics I have read. What peaked my interest was Lovecraftian like images and character from Doctor Strange’s past who he thought was dead. First volume don’t bring much light to how the character is still alive. Character has big role in story but mystery still remains. This volume contains story of villains getting magical weapons. Last issue was bit let down because of villain’s weak motivation.
Once again biggest problem was setting this into Marvel universe and having other superheroes mentioned. Same problem Immortal Hulk and current Green Lantern has. All of these work best when they don’t add other superheroes into mix. Artwork brings weird and magical world alive like only comic books can. There are horror elements but artwork make it not as dark as it could be. Characters at hospital bring enough humor.
Series was cancelled after only six issues which means we never got to see where this could have gone. Marvel probably acted too soon. There are some of us who wait for trades and rather read comic books in larger chunks. This was cancelled months before first trade was released. What we got was good start. I would have made this fourth on-going comic to read. Others being Blade Runner 2019, Immortal Hulk and Green Lantern. I wanted to see where this was going. It had the magic. Pun intended. Always intent your puns.
